Com veus el teu esplai?

Com veus el teu esplai?

Autor: Pekka Österberg

How do you see your esplai?

A colleague of mine was facilitating a debate in our sectors training course. Participants of this debate were monitors from different Esplais. We were discussing about ungrowth and he asked us how do we take ungrowth in consideration in our Esplais, what is our contribution to the issue, what could be done better, which are the strong areas and where we are really good. The answers were more or less about recycling and energy saving light bulbs. Don’t you think there is something crucial missing?

I have been living last 4 months in Vilafranca. There might not be anything special for you to live in Vilafranca except is full of very nice people. But for me on the other hand it’s a quite a change in my life since I’m from Finland. I’m talking here about two countries which are both Europe but still very different.

I’m living in Vilafranca and working with MIV because I’m taking part to a European voluntary service project (EVS). I’m not the only one, but there are bunch of other people participating in the same project in similar organisations all around the world. The core idea of the project is to go abroad, live in a foreign country and through volunteering in organisation learn. Learning by doing and experiencing especially in a foreign culture is not always the easiest way to learn but it sure is effective. The learning is very concrete not only for the volunteer but also for the hosting organisation and in my case for MIV. For example, in Esplais participation is commonly heard word, but what does it actually means and how can a person from foreign country without common language participate?

After participating daily work in esplai, different meeting on different levels of Esplac, trainings and activities with youth and other monitors I’m very proud to tell that I’m volunteering in Esplai and I’m very happy to see that all of my colleagues thinks in similar way. Working in a foreign culture with a foreign language with new methods and on new topics could not be easier than it’s here with Esplac and with MIV and truly participatory and well organised youth movement.

I’m not saying that using energy saving light bulbs or recycling is useless. Maybe the fact that there are hundreds of active, critical and eager young people passing knowledge, ideas and generating a space for thousands of children and youth to be their selves, to be creative and perhaps learn about ungrowth is too obvious for you but at least for me it’s a huge achievement and it definitely  should not taken for granted. Do not underestimate yourself or the importance of the work you do in your Esplai. Awareness of the resources we have, knowing that we are something much more than just light bulbs and that actually all of us are fighting for social change is very important.

He estat vivint durant els últims 4 mesos a Vilafranca.
